A 3-year-old girl, who was believed to have been abused, died upon arrival at the hospital here on Thursday night. Syafia Humairah Sahari had injuries on the chin, stomach and below the ear when she was brought to the emergency ward by the boyfriend of a close relative.
Police later arrested the relative and her boyfriend.
The woman in her 20s was arrested at the hospital mortuary while her 28-year-old taxi driver boyfriend was picked up at 3am yesterday.
Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent Norel Azmi Affandi Yahya said police were checking whether the duo were high on drugs when they abused Syafia.
He said Syafia's mother was admitted to the hospital after learning of her daughter's death.
On Thursday, Syafia was brought to the emergency ward at 8.30pm by the boyfriend and another man. They claimed the child was involved in a road accident.
The men immediately left the hospital when a nurse asked them for more information. The boyfriend gave the excuse that he was in a hurry to lodge a police report on the accident.
Police came to know about the death when the nurse contacted them at 11pm the same night to enquire if anyone had lodged a report.
Norel confirmed there were no reports lodged of an accident involving a child.
It is understood the duo had been in a six-year relationship and have an 18-month-old child.
And now she is pregnant with a 4 month child.
